Pack a lunch the night before plan to be there the entire day! The Melbourne Zoo has so many animals to see and learn about that you will need every minute of the opening hours to do so. Their ape enclosure is now well over 15 years old now and is still one of their best attractions. When you drop past the entrance be sure to ask for the talk times as well as getting a map. Half the learning can come from the talks from the zoologists along the way and they are really open to questions from children about the animals in their care.

Now there is also a reason I suggest a packed lunch. The food quality is by and large of takeaway standard with a price to make you cringe. The only exception we could find was some stir-fry like dishes near the elephant enclosure.
